All processed collections and cataloged items in the archives may be freely consulted, except for a small number of restricted institutional records which require written permission from designated university officials. Materials do not circulate.

GENERAL SCOPE AND CONTENTS:

The St. Louis University Archives is the primary repository for all official records of this institution. In addition, the archives maintains collections of related interest to St. Louis University. These generally fall into four categories:

  1. "Personal Papers" relating to individuals who have been in any way associated with the university (trustees, administrators, faculty/staff, students/alumni, supporters, etc.)
  2. St. Louis History" relating to the historical development of St. Louis and the surrounding region.
  3. "Catholica" relating to Roman Catholic churches and activities in the St. Louis area
  4. "Americana" relating to items of interest to American history, which may have affected the St. Louis area, with a primary emphasis on the westward movement.

MAJOR COLLECTIONS:

  1. SLU Bulletins and Catalogs Collection (1832-present). [69 lin. ft.]. Annual bulletins and catalogs describing academic requirements, course offerings and faculty. (Early editions also include lists of students and academic awards.)
  2. SLU Jesuit Scrapbooks (1831-1942). Microfilm. Clippings relating to SLU people and activities, arranged chronologically.
  3. SLU Athletic Scrapbooks (1905-37). Microfilm. Clippings relating to SLU sports activities, arranged chronologically.
  4. SLU 1904 World's Fair Exhibit Collection (1751-1850). [60 mss]. French and Spanish documents relating to colonial St. Louis, exhibited by SLU at the 1904 World's Fair.
  5. Dr. Thomas A. Dooley Collection (1950-68). [17 cu.ft.]. Scrapbooks, photographs and audio-visual materials of medical missionary Tom Dooley.
  6. Oscar W. Collet Collection (1841-1904). [753 mss]. Correspondence by Collet concerning his own historical research and his work as president of the Missouri Historical Society.
  7. Mary C. Clemens Collection (1767-1926). [1921 mss]. Family papers preserved by this descendant of John Mullanphy, early St. Louis landowner and financier.
  8. 8. Rev. Walter H. Hill, S.J., Collection (1822-1902). [68 mss]. Correspondence of Fr. Hill with other Jesuits, notes for his history of SLU, personal papers and sermons.
