ACCESS AND USE:

The collection of Vatican Library manuscripts on microfilm and related research material is open to all interested researchers. It is assumed that researchers will have the skills in paleogaphy and languages needed for manuscript research. Lending and copying services are restricted to published material; the Library is not authorized to lend or copy manuscripts.

GENERAL SCOPE AND CONTENTS:

Collection strengths include microfilm copies of manuscript codices from various European libraries. Represented are all areas of humanistic studies and the history of science from classical antiquity to the early modern period. Attention has been given to gathering related research materials, as: manuscript catalogues, text editions, and scholarly studies of manuscripts. Still the focus of scholarship and collection development are the manuscripts of the Biblioteca Apostolica Vaticana, from which roughly 80% of all Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and Western European vernaculars manuscripts have been microfilmed for thec ollection. The Vatican Archives are not included. Also on microfilm in the Library is an extensive collection of documents on Jesuit work in Latin America, the United States, and the Philippines, mainly in the colonial period.

  2. A complete set of the Vatican Library's published and unpublished catalogs for its manuscript collection is held. In addition, the Vatican Microfilm Collection has an extensive and growing collection of manuscript catalogs and related sources pertaining to hundreds of repositories in Great Britain, Europe, and the United States.
  3. Manuscripta , a journal devoted to manuscript research based on the resources of the Vatican Microfilm Collection as well as other libraries.This journal often publishes lists of Vatican manuscripts available in the collection.
