GENERAL SCOPE AND CONTENTS:
Contains manuscripts relating to St.Louis and Missouri history, with strengths in the fields ofAfrican-American history, the environment, education,immigration, journalism, labor, politics, social reform andwomen's history. Also includes extensive photograph and oralhistory collections.
MAJOR COLLECTIONS:
- UM-St. Louis Black History Project Collection, 1911-1983, 140 folders, 27 tapes. Includes publicity files of NHPRC funded project that co-sponsored three conferences on local black history. Includes reports, correspondence, program surveys and biographical information of historical figures.
- Witman, Arthur, (1902- ), 1930s-1970s, @50,000 images. Post-Dispatch news photographer, 1932-1969. Subjects include women in World War II, labor unions, the March on Washington, Churchill's "Iron Curtain" speech at Fulton, MO, the 1939 sharecroppers strike and the construction of the Arch.
- League of Women Voters of Missouri Records, 1911-1976, 438 folders, 9 tapes, 55 microfilm rolls. Contains papers of Missouri Equal Suffrage Association, 1919-1920.
- St. Louis Labor Tribune, Records, 1918-1987. Bound volumes of Indiana Labor Tribune, 1955-1973 and St. Louis Labor Tribune, 1987; correspondence and minutes of AFL-CIO Local 20711, 1937-1975; files of publisher Maury Rubin, 1958-1967.
- Sierra Club, Ozark Chapter (1971- ), Records, 1956-1977, 210 folders. Missouri and Arkansas comprise the Sierra Club's Ozark Chapter.
- Hecker, Friedrich (1811-1881), Papers, 1825-1986, 82 folders, 2 oversize boxes. Led revolts in Germany in 1848 and 1849, emigrated to America and commanded two regiments in the Civil War. Contains letters, certificates, and newsclippings.
- Dooley, Thomas A. (1927-1961) Papers, 1932-1986, 219 folders, 5 volumes, 85 tapes, 533 photographs, 10 videotapes. Physician, naval officer, humanitarian, best-selling author.
- Perkins, Marlin, Papers, 1905-1986. Photographs, scrapbooks, newsclippings, correspondence, itineraries, program listings, films and contracts of former director of St. Louis Zoo.
- Oral history Collections, 1975-1990, c.1000 tapes. Interviews with St. Louis immigrants, black leaders, jazz and rock musicians, union members, and labor and political leaders.
- Snow, Thad (1881-1955), Papers, 1921-1954, 86 folders, 2 scrapbooks. Charleston, Missouri planter, author, and reformer. Known as the Sage of Swampeast Missouri, wrote widely on farming politics, economics, foreign policy.
- Socialist Party of St. Louis and Missouri, Records, 1909-1964, 98 folders, 1 photograph, 7 tapes, 10 microfilm rolls. Includes correspondence, membership records, financial reports, position papers and publications.
- Theodore Lentz, (1926-1983), Papers, 1926-1983, 566 folders, 24 microfilm rolls. Peace researcher. Correspondence, articles, and manuscripts.
- Drey, Kay (1933- ), Papers, 1965-1989, 125 folders. Active in protesting the Calloway Nuclear plant.
- Broeg, Bob (1918- ), Papers, 1974-1986, 30 folders. Sports writer and editor for the Post-Dispatch, 1946-1985.
- Mallinkrodt, Edward, Jr. (1878-1967), Papers, 1798-1981, 1320 folders, 17 volumes. Industrialist, scientist and philanthropist, director of Mallinkrodt Chemical Works.
- Planned Parenthood Association of St. Louis (1932- ), Records, 1930-1975, 1099 folders, 12 oversize scrapbooks, 2 tapes. Collection traces group's early history and growth. Includes scrapbooks and tapes of informational broadcasts.
- Committee for Environmental Information, 1956-1977, 438 folders, 8 tapes, 4 scrapbooks.
- Dilliard, Irving (1904- ), Papers, 1922-1980. Post-Dispatch staff writer from 1927 to 1960.
- McCue, George (1910- ), Papers, 1948-1985. Post-Dispatch arts editor, 1965-1975. Author of several books on subjects related to art and architecture.
- Click, James Weldon (1917-1988), Papers, 1937-1963. Led effort to remove United Electrical, Radio and Machine Workers 1102 from Communist influence.
- Preisler, Paul William (1902-1971), Papers, 1902-1971. Biochemist, lawyer, and labor leader. Correspondence, minutes, legal records, business papers, campaign material, newsclippings and photographs.
